Iyalode Alaba Lawson Biography: Early Life, Career, Nationality, Education, Age, and Date of Death
Alaba Lawson, an educator and the fourth Egba Iyalode. Alaba Lawson Group of Schools is a private coeducational school in Abeokuta, and Alaba is the school proprietress.
In a tribute honoring her golden year, Keesi Abeokuta chief Sorunke described her as an outspoken traditionalist with exceptional oratory skills, while Akarigbo Sonariwo of Remo hailed her as a front-line mobilizer of human resources.
Her enterprise and charitable endeavors, which have been praised by Abeokuta societies in all circles, have been likened to those of two notable Egba women in history: Funmilayo Kuti and Tejuosho Bisoye, who were both her forerunners in the Egba traditional office of the Iyalode.
Iyalode Alaba Lawson Early Life
Her parents became traveling evangelists in the year of her birth, therefore she spent her early years immersed in the activities of the Jehovah Witness society. She started attending an open class in front of St. John’s Church in Igbehin, Abeokuta, before turning five years old. She was soon enrolled in St. James African Church Primary School, Idi Ape, Abeokuta, for a more structured primary education. The school was constructed on a rocky hill, giving kids a natural play area. By a fortunate turn of events, she was accepted in 1963 to the Abeokuta Girl’s Grammar School, where she was taught by Mrs. Marian Hughes, an educator whose approach would influence her own career.

Alaba attended the Anglican Girl’s Grammar School, which was thought to be a highbrow institution when she enrolled there in 1963, for her secondary education. Her favorite subjects were literature, history, needlework, and English. She also participated in stage acting as an extracurricular activity. She completed her Child Education classes at Prince’s Gate, London’s St. Nicholas Montessori College, where she received a first-class diploma.

Both Alaba’s paternal and maternal grandparents were merchants, and because of their large stock, she and her siblings were given the nickname Omo Aderu Lona Meji, which translates to “child of load careers”[1]. Her maternal grandpa, Pa Coker, dealt in European products, while her paternal grandfather, Pa Abraham Jiboku, better known as Edun, was a cocoa businessman who passed away in 1918. In the hamlet of Ososun, which is now part of the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, Pa Abraham gave birth to Alaba’s father, Emmanuel Abiona Jiboku, in 1910 through one of his wives who was also named Alaba.

Iyalode Alaba Lawson Career
Alaba Lawson held the positions of President of NACCIMA, Odu’a Chambers of Commerce, and Chairman of the Board of Governing Council of Hood Abiola Polytechnic. In 2017, she was appointed head of the US-Nigeria Trade Council. The Federation of Women Entrepreneurs – Nigeria is led by her as president (FEBWE-Nigeria). She is a council member of the Nigeria British Chambers of Commerce (NBCC) and a member of the Institute of Directors. She attends services at the St. Peter Cathedral in Ake, Abeokuta.

Lawson who wqs also the first female President Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI) died early hours of Saturday 28th October 2023 at her residents in Abeokuta,Ogun State.
